Things Overheard
07-November-2007 from Don Patterson
Did you ever overhear your parents talking about you?
I would guess there are a
lot of things your parents said, that you may have forgotten. But if
you ever overheard them talking to others about you, then you are more
likely to remember what they said. Somehow you took their words to
others as being more honest or more valuable.
When you read the
Scriptures and bump into passages where God talks about his people -
it's like overhearing your parents talking about you. It is
honest and valuable. It is objective truth.
Consider this passage, in which Jesus is talking about us while he defends himself to unbelieving Jews:
"My
sheep listen to my voice; I know them and they follow me. I give them
eternal life and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of
my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no
one can snatch them out of my Father's hand. I and the Father are
one."
-John 10:27-30
Jesus
is proud of the fact that we listen to his voice. He proudly declares
that while we are listening to his voice, no one will pluck us from his
hand. Imagine his parental love gripping your hand tightly as you run
through the parking lot of life with him. No one will wrench you away
from him.
He loves you so much that
his strong love will grip you tighter than you can ever imagine. He
even says that his Father has the same grasp on you.
If you feel yourself
slipping away from Jesus, turn to his Word and pray "Lord, grip me
tighter. I believe the words that I overheard you say. You promised
that you would hold on and will not let go."
God will give you whatever you need to resist temptation and stay close to him.
